Fire Door Testing

Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & London

Fire doors are an important part of a building’s fire safety system. Not only can they offer building occupants a safe way out in the event of a fire, but they can also provide a level of resistance to control the spread of fire and smoke within a building.

Our fire door testing encompasses the complete door assembly, including frame, seals, hardware, panels, as well as the door leaves themselves. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, fire doors come under the responsible person’s duty to ensure the safest and shortest emergency exit route; they must open in the direction of escape and allow a person to “escape the premises as quickly and safely as possible.”

Fire Door Resistance Ratings

Fire doors are given a fire-resistance rating, which forms part of the design and specification process to ensure suitability for your particular building or facility. The level of fire-resistance required will be determined by many factors, including:

  • the number and dimensions of emergency routes
  • the overall dimensions of the premises
  • the unique risks of any given premises (e.g. the presence of flammable materials)
  • the number of building occupiers, amongst many others.

Amthal’s expert engineers can identify and advise what your fire doors’ current rating is and what it should be.

Section 17 of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 covers the maintenance of a facility’s fire safety measures, including its facilities, equipment and devices. Inclusive of fire doors, the order demands: “a suitable system of maintenance and are maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair.”

As part of a holistic approach to fire safety, Amthal can support you in carrying out annual inspections on your fire doors to ensure doors are still compliant and fit-for-purpose. Our engineers have specialist fire door safety training. We will work together to produce an appropriate maintenance schedule for your specific location, a process for the consistent documentation of safety checks and can advise on any maintenance works or improvements required.
